Nice to Meet You – The Inter-University Forum for Biomedical Research in Israel

The Inter-University Forum for Biomedical Research in Israel was founded in 2001. It works to preserve and improve medical research in Israel, particularly research involving animals. The Forum believes that animal research is carried out for the benefit of humankind, to improve the health and quality of life of all of us. Stopping this research would severely harm medical progress in Israel, as well as the health and quality of life of its citizens.

Animal research in Israel is conducted in accordance with Israeli law and with the regulations accepted in developed Western countries.

For

Humanity owes its medical achievements to animal research

Over the years, animal research has been used to develop medicines and treatments, contributing greatly to longer life expectancy and a better quality of life for all of us.

Fruits of the research

Vaccines against diseases (polio, measles), new medicines and treatments for diseases that were once incurable, disease research and organ transplantation.

Without animal research, medicine cannot advance

Today there are no complete alternatives that can simulate a human system.

Doctors gain skill and knowledge through experience

Surgeons become skilled as they gain experience. Practice on cadavers and on a whole, living animal are both essential for trainees.

Basic biomedical research is vital for developing the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and for ensuring Israel's medical progress

Against

Results in animals cannot be applied to humans

The potential effect of a drug on humans cannot be inferred from its tested effect on animals, because different species respond very differently to the same substance.

Animal disease models are unreliable

In many studies, the animal model produces symptoms similar to the human disease, but the causes of the disease are different.

Research alternatives to animals exist

Clinging to the old, familiar paradigm of animal research risks holding back the creative thinking needed to advance science in general and medicine in particular.

Today, medicine can advance without using animals, through cell cultures, computer simulations, non-invasive imaging, epidemiological research and more.

The struggle for animals is a struggle for social justice

One meaning of the term "rights" is that every individual matters, and that "whoever saves one life, it is as if they saved an entire world." Animals deserve the right to live in well-being, free from suffering, requirements that the law and its enforcement already guarantee.
