The Tulane National Primate Research Center has all the facilities needed to carry out research on pathogens such as the new coronavirus. Director Jay Rappaport expects to receive samples and begin testing to find out how the virus affects rhesus macaques and African green monkeys, because their responses to the coronavirus are similar to the human body's response. Scientists at the center plan to begin testing vaccine candidates in four to six months, and the findings will be shared with other research centers in order to minimize the amount of testing carried out in animals.
