The European Animal Research Association (EARA) has revealed a marked absence of new calls from activist groups to ban animal experiments during the coronavirus crisis.
In an article published in the magazine Spiked, Kirk Leech, executive director of EARA, notes that activist groups such as PETA and Cruelty Free International have recently stopped their online claims that the use of animals in research is ineffective.
"These activist groups are avoiding public exposure at this point in time, because they know that their arguments against animal experiments would be ridiculed by the public if they were published during the coronavirus pandemic," says Leech.
"Now is the time to make the ethical and scientific case for the use of animals in research," Leech adds. "We must expose those who would have us simply cross our fingers and hope that this whole thing ends on its own."
