Researchers are currently carrying out experiments to develop potential vaccines against COVID-19. To reduce the risk of serious side effects and increase the chances of success, the experiments are being carried out in transgenic mice, as well as in hamsters, ferrets and monkeys, before they are conducted in humans. Experiments in mice in particular can help researchers narrow the field down to a few promising approaches. In addition, although mice are not naturally susceptible to the virus, they are being crossbred to produce effects similar to those seen in humans.
