Scientists recently succeeded in an operation in which a leg belonging to a brown mouse was transplanted onto the body of a white mouse. The transplant was carried out using a technique that "tricks" the body into treating the transplanted tissue as its own.
Inspired by the way cancer cells take control of the immune system, scientists at the University of Pittsburgh engineered microscopic particles that allowed the rodents to develop tolerance to transplanted organs for up to 200 days.
The research could pave the way for long-term, targeted suppression of the immune response in humans, sparing patients the need to take medication every day.
