Across Europe, many researchers are at the forefront of the race to find an effective treatment for the coronavirus.
For basic research, and for the testing stages of drugs for COVID-19, it is likely that several animal species will need to be used, including ferrets, mice and monkeys.
One study using mice is a collaboration between scientists from Utrecht University and Erasmus University Medical Center in the Netherlands, together with the company Harbour BioMed and the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover in Germany. The study led to the development of a human antibody that can prevent infection with the virus.
At the same time, a collaboration is under way between the VIB-UGent Center for Medical Biotechnology, the German Primate Center – Leibniz Institute for Primate Research, and the University of Texas at Austin in the US. This study succeeded in identifying another antibody that neutralizes the coronavirus. The researchers are now preparing preclinical trials for treating the virus.
