A paper published in the journal Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience found that the anticonvulsant drugs lamotrigine and gabapentin succeeded in preventing brain damage in frog embryos that had been exposed to nicotine. The damage was prevented by encouraging increased expression of the HCN2 gene and by correcting disrupted bioelectric patterns. Exposure to nicotine in the womb can disrupt the electrical patterns in the fetal brain, leading to cognitive impairments and to memory and learning difficulties.
