A paper published in Cell Host & Microbe describes a hybrid virus developed at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, which helps research teams study the new coronavirus more safely. The hybrid pathogen is based on VSIV, a virus that infects cattle, horses and pigs, but in this case it also carries the "Spike" protein of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. This combination allows the virus to interact with body cells and antibodies in a similar way to the new coronavirus, without causing clinical disease.
